Writing Opportunity: The Siskiyou Prize for New Environmental Literature

This is the fifth iteration of the Siskiyou Prize and submissions are open from now until December 31st. There is a $25 reading fee.

This year’s judge is Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, which has been translated into German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Portuguese, Spanish, and French. She is also the author of Burger in Bloomsbury’s Object Lessons series, Neither Man nor Beast: Feminism and the Defense of AnimalsThe Pornography of Meat, and, most recently, Protest Kitchen: Fight Injustice, Save the Planet, and Fuel Your Resistance One Meal at a Time, with Virginia Messina.

The Prize accepts both published books and full-length, completed unpublished prose manuscripts. Manuscripts should be approximately 40,000 to 90,000 words (i.e., please do not send novellas or individual essays or stories; please also note the contest is not open to poetry or children’s books).

The 2019 Siskiyou Prize winner will receive:

  • A cash award of $1,000
  • Two-week residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology during the 2020-2021 residency season
  • All unpublished manuscripts submitted to the prize will be considered for publication by Ashland Creek Press.

The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, founded in 1970, fosters creativity, intellectual inquiry, and education, expanding the relationships between art, nature, and humanity. The Center offers workshops, residencies, and community events at its facility on the central Oregon coast, at the edge of a Nature Conservancy preserve and in the center of a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.
